“Place of the Big Tree”
Location: Chajul, Quiché, Guatemala
Size: 280 acres
Population: 31 families / 202 people
Ended Agros Support: 2004
Agros purchased land for the Xetzé families in 1989. Xetzé is the first community Agros accompanied throughout the entire development process. With the help of volunteers, villagers built simple homes, installed latrines, and poured a basketball court.
The people of Xetzé grow corn, beans and vegetables for their own use on terraced, irrigated fields that they built. They also raise chickens, rabbits, sheep and goats. The village has a schoolhouse which also functions as a community center and leadership offices. The school runs through six grades and also offers adult education programs.
The village has constructed two churches and there is a new clinic with a nurse who visits twice a month.
