The life and teaching of Jesus was counter-cultural in his day and in ours. Jesus preferred to spend his time with the brokenhearted, the sick and disabled, and the marginalized. He elevated the status of women and continually modeled to his disciples care for the poor. In this way Jesus invites us into a different worldview that values each human regardless of poverty or status, and one that challenges injustice, self-righteousness and the abuse of power. We at Agros seek to follow Jesus’ example in our work to restore hope and opportunity to the world’s poor, and we invite others to participate with us.
Agros is a faith-based organization, but does not subscribe to any particular creed, doctrinal statement, or proselytizing program. Jesus chose to love and care for those in need, restoring their lives in transformative ways. He did not impose religion on people and we consciously avoid doing that as well. Villagers are not chosen by their religious or political views. Because we work in Central America and Mexico where Christianity is commonly embraced, many Agros villagers would say that they are either Catholic or Protestant. On different occasions they share their faith openly and conduct worship services. On such occasions, visitors from the U.S. are welcome to participate in the services and activities.
The Agros Board and staff are committed to follow Jesus and to heed his most important command: To love God and love one another. Our faith is rooted in the belief that this love transforms everything we see and do in Agros. In loving and serving the poor we integrate into our development model values that Jesus taught: love, peace, unity, and justice. We believe these values will enable the people we serve to live with faith, dignity, mutual understanding and consideration.
